What is The Chairman's Society?

The Chairman's Society is an organization exclusively for hospital board Chairmen and Chairmen-Elect. Membership in TCS is by invitation-only.

The Chairman Society's Mission is to provide healthcare board Chairmen and Chairmen-Elect with high-quality educational experiences and practical resources that will enhance their leadership effectiveness.

Our programs are predicated on the belief that Chairmen Officers benefit from education in a collegial environment where they can learn not only from experts in the field but from others who have board Chair experience.

To this end, TCS will provide cutting-edge education to Chairmen officers that contributes to exemplary hospital and hospital system governance. We believe our first responsibility is to our members, whose support of TCS is indicative of their commitment to governance excellence and the impact that governance has on their organizations and the communities that their organizations serve.

Through a long-term commitment to this Mission, we will be known as a company that has raised the bar for governance education, provides value for education dollars spent, and has contributed to hospital and hospital system governance excellence nationwide.

What makes The Chairman's Society unique?

  • Unlike other providers of governance education, which typically involve the CEOs in educational programs, TCS’s programs are designed for the board chairman and chairman-elect, not the CEO (although CEOs may attend TCS programs as guests of their chairmen officers). Although certain topics/issues are best addressed by the Chairman and CEO jointly, we believe others are topics that CEOs are not necessarily comfortable tackling head-on but would like their Chairmen and Chairmen-elect to better understand and address. There currently is no forum where chairmen can discuss their various issues exclusively with each other.

  • One of the key differentiators of TCS programs is be the opportunity for chairmen officers to learn from other board chairmen. Over time, past board chairmen members of TCS are invited to serve as faculty and panelists so attendees can learn from their experiences.

  • TCS educational programs are predicated on the belief that practical governance is effective governance. In other words, programs will be reality-based (rather than theoretical) and provide tools and techniques that can be applied by those who attend.

  • TCS programs are designed to provide both the basics of being an effective chairman and higher-level education for board chairmen who already have some experience. (These are covered in separate educational offerings—not in single program.)
